Zaminiyah al'Zaman and Daxby *Smolin

A recent commission for the ever-awesome *prodigal-gamer This one depicts two of his characters, a dashing pirate captain and her traveling companion, whom she rescued (sort of) from slavery.

I wanted to indicate a shallow depth and distance between the characters via the light source, while also creating a unifying element to tie them together and a three-step rhythm based on the heads and lantern. The chain reinforces the connection (literally and pictorially) and helps both to reiterate the circle of light and to guide the eye back around the image. I used a purple and yellow-orange color scheme to enhance the warm and cool of the lighting. Finally, I wanted to depict some aspect of their relationship, which veers between love, resentment, and rivalry, so despite Dax being in a very servile state, he can't help sneaking some moon eyes at Zam when he thinks she's not looking.

Zaminiyah al'Zaman is one of my Pathfinder Society characters. She's the illegitimate daughter of a Taldan^1 adventurer/naval officer and a Q'adiran^2 priestess of Sarenrae^3. Now an adventurer herself, Zam travels Golarion, looking to unvover lost treasures for the Pathfinder Society (and to make herself rich in the process).

Dax is a Taldan noble, a little older than Zam. Though he taunts her incessantly about her "inferior, savage Q'adiran blood," he's actually far from her equal in most respects (save brute strength), and he secretly has a crush on her. When Dax was arrested during an adventure in Q'adira, Zam didn't feel right about etting him be sold off as a slave to a complete stranger, so she bought him herself.

1)Taldor is a fantasy nation based on any number of declining empires, from Roman to British.
2)Q'adira is a fantasy nation that is obsessesed with mercantile power and looks a lot like a fantasy version of the Middle East. Q'adira and Taldor hate one another.
3)Sarenrae is a goddess of fire, healing, and the sun; she is worshipped extensively in Q'adira, but her worship is illegal in Taldor.
